Novell, its deals.. and the common sense
Miguel, I really enjoyed your last post. Actually, it wasn't quite what I expected. :-)
Do you realize that trying to justify the deal with Microsoft (which in my honest opinion is a big threat for the community) you mentioned "Microsoft" 13 times, "Novell" 9 times.. and here comes the funny thing, "Sun" 12 times?
Come on! Even if Sun is a company to be followed, you make it seem as if Sun signed the deal rather than Novell. Don't be shy, Novell did it and nobody else, I suppose that the company should be proud of it (shares gained a few cents).
By the way, there was another comment that made me smile: Mono in Solaris 10? and "maybe Java emotions were too strong inside the company for this to be even considered".
You know.. actually, it isn't about emotions. It is much simpler and more logical than that: there are two platforms. On one hand, we have a rock solid platform, enterprise ready since a decade ago and widely accepted (think of J2EE).
On the other hand, we have a third party implementation of another platform that currently is still immature and under development, that couldn't implement a garbage collector and ended up using ORP, that potentially infringes loads of Microsoft patents (I know that it isn't a problem for SLES customers, but it is for the rest of the world) and that causes quite a lot of concern in the community.
So, it doesn't seem to be because of "Java emotions", IMO it was because of plain and simple common sense. :-)

National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!" Only the state of Texas was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"
